Great book... hard emotionally to read as I think about my own children, but I'm glad I read it. I've asked all the children's church teachers and leaders of my church to read it and we are adjusting our programming and ways of talking about the Bible with our students. I hope this helps us pass on the passion and love for Jesus that we have to the next generation.
I grew up going to private school and attending church. I noticed when my peers stopped going to church. Why is it that I keep coming back to church while others don’t? When my kids were old enough to start noticing the same thing, I wondered why I as a parent placed value on my family going to church while other parents might let their kids skip? I kept asking myself these questions and looking for answers.

Already Gone was being talked about on social media, but was often in the light of “we need to ditch the Sunday School model because it isn’t working.” Being in children’s ministry, I remember how hard it was to occasionally sit with my parents for big church and I still see value in children’s Sunday School. So I didn’t see any reason to read a book I would not agree with.

But people didn’t stop talking about the book, so I finally gave it a chance. There is much more to it than “there is something wrong with traditional Sunday School” and “the throw the baby out with the bath water plan”. And for some churches, its more than Sunday School that has gone wrong. There were a few times I questioned how the surveys were conducted—were only students asked these questions and were Sunday school teachers ever questioned? And sometimes they jumped to alarming conclusions when the results cited pointed to something more neutral.

The reason I keep going to church actually wasn’t because of something I learned at church, it was what I was learning at home—that there are sources outside the Bible that prove it is true (archeology, science, ancient culture, other ancient writings). Most churches don’t tell you these things. In fact, in speaking to one of my former youth pastors, he admitted that most churches see any ministry for those under 18 as merely entertainment. And the red flags that were being spoken of in the book I was watching played out among my kids friends—many attend church, believing the evolution from science class in the public school system, no pastor is teaching them otherwise, and then these friends/students are then reinterpreting other parts of the Bible. They use the logic “If I can reinterpret what the Bible says here, why can’t I reinterpret what the Bible says there. If I question this accuracy of the Bible, then how can I count on it for that.” These are middle school and high school kids I’m talking about.

So the biggest question when reading this book isn’t “What’s wrong with Sunday School? What’s wrong with church?” The biggest question is what are you going to do with what you have learned from this book?

Coauthor Ken Ham is a prominent “Young Earth Creationist,” and the president/CEO and founder of Answers in Genesis, and the Creation Museum; he has written/cowritten many other books, such as How Do We Know the Bible is True? Volume 1,How Do We Know the Bible Is True? Volume 2,The New Answers Book Over 25 Questions on Creation/Evolution and the Bible,The New Answers Book 2,[[ASIN0890512825 The Great Dinosaur Mystery Solved, etc. C. Britt Beemer founded America’s Research Group; he has also written books such as Predatory Marketing What Everyone in Business Needs to Know to Win Today's Consumer and It Takes A Prophet To Make A Profit 15 Trends That Are Reshaping American Business.

They wrote in the first chapter of this 2009 book, “It’s time to wake up and see the tidal wave washing away the foundation of your church. The numbers are in---and they don’t look good. From across Christendom the reports are the same A mass exodus is underway. Most youth of today will not be coming to church tomorrow… And it’s not just happening on the nominal fringe; it’s happening at the core of the faith… pollster George Barna … unquestionably quantified the seriousness of the situation six out of ten 20-somethings who were involved in a church during their teen years are already gone… most 20-somethings disengage from active participation in the Christian faith during their young adult years---and often beyond that.” (Pg. 22-23)

Later, they add, “The abandoned church buildings of Europe are… graphic symbols---warnings to those of us who are seeing the same trends in our local congregations we are one generation away from the evaporation of church as we know it…. unless we come to better understand what is happening and implement a clear, biblical plan to circumvent it.” (Pg. 25)

They explain, “We wanted to know WHO was leaving, and WHAT (if anything) could be done about it… Britt and his America’s Research Group initiated a qualified study… his team studied ONLY those whom we are most concerned about every person in our sample said they attended church every week or nearly every week when they were growing up, but never or seldom go today… Why did they leave the church?... At first, we were surprised (and a little disappointed) that there wasn’t a single reason… Other researchers have come to similar conclusions… As Britt studied his data, it was obvious that multiple issues are behind the exodus from church… it turns out that only 11 percent of those who have left the Church were still attending during the college years. Almost 90 percent of them were lost in middle school and high school. By the time they got to college they were already gone! About 40 percent are leaving the Church during elementary and middle school years!... Whatever diseases are fueling the epidemic of losing our young people, they are infecting our students much, much earlier than most assumed… We are losing many more people by middle school and many more by high school than we will ever lose in college.” (Pg. 27-32)

They point out, “All of these numbers would be a little bit easier to accept if we had surveyed a broader cross-section of Christian churches. If these numbers included all of the nominal, liberal churches… then these results would be a little bit more understandable. But they don’t … These results have come from the Christian education programs of the most dedicated, Scripture-affirming churches out there---imagine what the situation must be in the Church as a whole!” (Pg. 44-45)

They went on in the survey, “we started with the following question ‘Do you expect to attend church regularly when you have children?’… Things got interesting when we compared these results to their levels of belief… Notice there is a significant correlation between believing in the creation account and whether they will come back! There is a tie between what they believe about Genesis and their attitude toward Christianity---which is understandable. If the authority of God’s Word is undermined in the first book… this leads to a slippery slide of unbelief about the whole of the Bible.” (Pg. 61-62)

They argue, “Faith in Christ alone saves---not whether a person believes in a young or old earth, or whether the days of creation are long periods of time… There are many Christians… who are truly saved, yet believe in millions of years and reinterpret the days of creation, or believe that God used evolution…. However, when a person believes in millions of years (or Darwinian evolution), and then reinterprets the days of creation to be long periods of time, they are undermining the very authority from which they get the message of the gospel… Here is a warning to any of us if we teach such a compromised position to our children, be prepared for the great possibility they will open the door of compromise wider and get on that all-too-familiar slippery slide of unbelief.” (Pg. 81)

They observe “to try to restore relevancy to Scripture, what do we usually do these days? We add drums and guitars to the service. We think that the Church needs to follow the culture in order to be relevant… Truth makes you relevant. It doesn’t mean we can’t make such reforms to be more contemporary---but the motive and priority are what is so important… There is a war going on over the Word of God. This is not the time to focus on making people feel good.” (Pg. 110-111)

This book will be of great interest to those interested in such demographic analysis of trends in the church (particularly of the Evangelical side).
