The Hunter’s Beginning is the story of a young girl and her search for a place, any place, where she could fit in. Unwanted by a father who regards her as being useless, persecuted by a guild that does not and will not accept her, mistreated by the academy instructors to the point of physical injuries, and even hated by her fellow cadets, Kile Veller finds acknowledgement in the oddest of places, the heart of yarrow. It is only when she comes to accept this strange little companion as a friend that she realizes those things that separated her from the normal world, those things that isolated her from the world of men, are the same things that bind her to the natural world and gives her the courage she needs to do the one thing she desires above all else, to be become a Hunter.
This is the journey of Kile Veller from the trials of the entry examination within the mystic’s tower to the hardships of her first year at the Hunter’s Academy. She quickly learns that not everything is what it seems and a freaky little peasant girl with Orseen blood from a town that no one has ever heard of might actually become one of the greatest Hunters that the Kingdom of Aru would ever see. All she has to do now is learn how to use a sword, and survive her combat lessons.

The good: A great story with great rhythm and a really good read. The bad: An UNGODLY amount of spelling mistakes. A LEGION of unnecessary commas. I found a sentence with six commas. Dear god! When you have that many commas, some higher power should intervene and make you separate those into different sentences.
I went through books 1-4 and corrected EVERY SINGLE SPELLING MISTAKE. I don't know why I did it, but the further I read the more irritated I became. The story is SO good, but it is unbelievably distracting given the sheer magnitude of spelling errors. I would sometimes correct 3-4 per kindle page. You can barely go ONE page without an error. Never mind the inconsistencies between sequels. Characters names change spelling between books and details written about in one book are refuted in another.
I would LOVE to continue reading this author but I don't know if I can take it. For the amount of people who have bought this book and it's sequels, SURELY he can hire an editor or even just use spellcheck a little. PLEASE!!! Will probably write this same review for each of the books in this series that I've read.

Hunter Beginning Legend of the Wild Hunter Book 1 eBook Garry Spoor Reviews
If not for the plot and character development, I would've given this a single star. There were editing misses on just about every single page, and they yanked me out of the story trying to figure out what the heck was going on. Homonym misuses, inappropriate apostrophes, words simply missing from sentences, flat out misspelled words ("dinning" hall, really?!?) show a lack of respect for the craft as well as the audience.
This is a story about a young woman entering the Hunter's Academy, something her family and the academy members were against. Overcoming adversity while discovering her own special magic is a well covered storyline, but Garry Spoor does an excellent job keeping it fun and interesting. The protagonist, is a likable character with an interesting and well done magical power.
Terrible grammar checking is a flaw, but one that I give a pass on here because there is just so much potential to this story and Mr. Spoor's writing that it would be a shame to bypass these books because of something easily corrected.
Read it for fun, accept the flaws, and you will find you have spent an enjoyable evening. You will also be like the rest of us, wondering when the next in the series will come out.
Enjoyable story of a young girl facing discrimination and many obstacles to become the person she wants to be. There is little violence, language or anything else that would cause me not to recommend this for a early teen or even 10 year old. I will be buying future books and allowing my own children to read them as well.
The reason I'm giving this book and the other 2 in this series 3 stars is because of the atrocious writing. It's common for a new writer on to have misspelled words and such. We've all seen it and I couldn't care less so long as a real effort is made to clean the book up before putting it out there. This is a completely different case though. Run on sentences, literally thousands of misused comma's, incorrect words (whose instead of who's), illogical changes to the story line from one book to the next and much more. Just when I would immerse myself into the story I would be jarred out again thanks to a sentence so poorly written that I couldn't just ignore it and continue.
I'm not suggesting anyone pass over this book because of the errors. Many don't care and will enjoy the book for what it is. I just hope the author does something to correct this in the future. I'm sorry to be blunt, but I've seen plenty of 12 year-olds who were functionally better writers.
The storyline and characters were good and interesting. The story flowed well and made you want to continue to read to find out what happened next. However, the book could stand a good editor. There were issues with singular and plural in the same sentence referencing the same thing. There were issues with personal pronouns and spelling. Past vs present tense in the same sentence let alone the same paragraph. Having said all that it isn't as bad as a lot of the self published kindle books. It was annoying because it was a good story and the grammar was a distraction.
On the whole the story reminded me of Tamora Pierce's Wild Page and Protector of the Small series. With some polishing I think it could be as good as those series.
Gaahhh! I would like to slap the author upside the head! This is a good story made horrible by atrocious editing. Almost every single page has a problem. Tense problems abound (using present tense when a past tense is needed), singular being used when plural is needed, etc. And wrong words are used constantly--waist instead of waste, loose instead of lose, past instead of passed, for example. The absolute worst was "Sir names" in place of surnames. All these problems constantly yank you right out of the story. Too bad, because this is an otherwise enjoyable little YA adventure tale along the lines of Tamora Pierce's Alanna The First Adventure, though not quite at that level of story telling. Kile is a girl determined to be a Hunter. Despite obstacles from her father and society in general she manages to pass the test to enter the Hunter Academy, only to find that non-stop pressure to quit comes from both the instructors and her fellow students up to and including physical abuse. I am in two minds about reading the second book in this series, the editing is so off-putting. This author needs to learn that spell checking does not equal editing.
The good A great story with great rhythm and a really good read.
The bad An UNGODLY amount of spelling mistakes. A LEGION of unnecessary commas. I found a sentence with six commas. Dear god! When you have that many commas, some higher power should intervene and make you separate those into different sentences.
